How To Make Your Podcast Stand Out From The Crowd
There is good news and bad news when it comes to podcasting.
The great news? Anybody can start a podcast.
The bad news? Anybody can start a podcast.
Americans listen to an average of 8 podcasts a week.
There are so many incredibly gifted podcasters but the bulk have no entertainment or broadcasting background. This means their podcasts are missing the basics to make them successful, connect, stand out and make money. So how do you stand out from the crowd and the THOUSANDS of others podcasts out there? Go niche.
Every good podcast starts with an idea that speaks to you. There are podcasts for literally everything under the sun and chances are, if you’re interested in something…someone else out there is interested in it, too. Do you love space? History? Video games? Are you a comedian or do you and your friends just have GREAT conversations you think would translate well to a podcast? These are all ideas that form the foundation of a good podcast. What topics do you love to follow on Twitter? What Reddit threads are you subscribed to? What content does your TikTok For You Page keep serving up? Find what makes you PASSIONATE and run with that.
Once you’ve got your content figured out, it’s onto marketing your content. But you do you navigate the crowded digital landscape to find people who, you know, actually care about what you’re saying? The same thing applies to your marketing as it does your content: go niche.
Take one hyper-focused topic from your podcast and then market directly to the people who would be most interested. Look for them on forums, Facebook pages, trending Twitter hashtags, Reddit threads. It’s ok if your entire podcast isn’t about that one topic, you just need to find the connection point to get listeners in the door. Bring the audience in with something that resonates with them, then once they sample your other content, they’ll stick around.
The most important parts of podcasting are content and delivery. That’s it. Figure that out, and the rest will follow.
